Part-Time Employment Allowed Under Social Security Rules
One of the questions my clients often ask me is whether they can work while applying for Social Security Disability benefits. The general answer is yes, provided it is not full-time work and you do not exceed the earning limit ($1,040 per month gross for 2013).

Can Working Damage My Claim?
If you are over age 55, working part-time should not damage your claim. However, if you are under 50, the judge and Social Security administrative personnel may wonder, "If you are working part time, why not full time?"
Many people who suffer from chronic illnesses or physical impairments may be able to work for a few hours a day or a few days a week. The key questions are:
- Can you do the job on a sustained basis, five days a week and eight hours a day?
- Is there a sufficient amount of work you can physically perform, and is it available where you live?
If the answer to either question is no, you may still meet Social Security's definition of disability.
